FAQs
General
Clean Hands Certified is the first certification and public participation platform focused on complete public handwashing systems—not just individual products.
To earn certification, a facility must provide:
- Touch-Free Soap
- Touch-Free Faucet
- Warm Water
- Hygienic Hand Drying
- Hands-Free Exit
Facilities that meet these standards become part of the Clean Hands Certified network, giving guests confidence that they can wash their hands properly from start to finish.
Next Step: Download the Clean Hands Certified app to explore certified locations, recommend facilities, and help improve public handwashing.
Most public restrooms require unnecessary hand contact or compromise proper handwashing somewhere along the process.
Clean Hands Certified was created to:
- Give the public a voice
- Recognize facilities doing it right
- Help facilities improve
- Connect businesses with local solution providers
- Provide manufacturers with real-world performance intelligence
- Raise the overall standard of public handwashing

Not for Clean Hands Certified certification. Based on our real-world testing, we do not consider hand dryers to provide the consistent, hygienic hand-drying experience required for certification.
Facilities are welcome to offer hand dryers as an additional option. However, to earn Clean Hands Certified status, they must also provide a reliable, touch-free, single-use paper towel dispenser that does not require touching a dispensing handle to receive a towel.
This requirement reflects the Clean Hands Certified standard, which is based on real-world public handwashing performance and the ability to consistently complete the handwashing process.
Certified facilities appear inside the Clean Hands Certified app, where guests can:
- Search for certified locations
- View your certification
- Recommend your facility
- Share/rate their experience
Whenever possible, give them a second life. If you’re replacing manual faucets, soap dispensers, or other restroom fixtures that are still in working condition, consider donating them to a local building materials reuse organization, such as a Habitat for Humanity ReStore (https://www.habitat.org/restores), or another nonprofit building supply recycler in your community.
Reusing functional fixtures helps reduce waste, supports affordable building projects, and keeps usable products out of landfills while allowing your facility to upgrade to a better handwashing experience.

For Manufacturers
Clean Hands Certified provides something manufacturers rarely receive:
Real-world intelligence from actual public handwashing experiences.
Instead of relying only on sales data or warranty claims, participating manufacturers gain insight into how their products perform in thousands of real public restrooms.
This includes information such as:
- Product availability
- Reliability
- Consistency
- Public satisfaction
- Common installation challenges
- Opportunities for improvement
- Trends across facility types and regions
These insights help manufacturers improve products, better support customers, and understand how their equipment performs in everyday use.
